ZERO WASTE POLICY

Our goal is to eliminate garbage going into landfills! We need your help!

KJES will consult with vendors to help with zero waste strategies. We need your help to eliminate garbage from the festival. This Zero Waste Policy is MANDATORY for any vendors at KJEF.  Vendors are required to comply to all policy instructions clearly and thoroughly for the entirety of the festival. Failure to do so will result in damage deposits being revoked and not be considered for future events.

Food and soiled paper waste from the festival will be composted using the Bokashi composting method. Bokashi composting handles more types of waste than traditional composting (meat, bones, paper, wood, etc) – however it can’t break down compostable plastics (even if corn or plant based) as the heat necessary to break them down is not created during the process.

Vendors who fail to comply with this zero waste policy will lose their damage deposit and not be considered for future events. Vendors who arrive with incorrect packaging will have to purchase correct packaging from KJEF at festival prices.

BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING

**** Note: If Vendors don’t use approved packaging, they will not be permitted to serve food at the festival. If you do not come prepared with the proper food service items and requirements – we will have biodegradable packaging for sale at festival prices. ****

We require all vendors to sell their products in BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING.

RECYCLABLE ITEMS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE – THEY MUST BE SPECIFICALLY BIODEGRADABLE. NO COMPOSTABLE PLASTIC OF ANY KIND. Please see the specific list below.

Serving or selling food in Polystyrene, waxed cardboard, foiled wax sheets is not acceptable. Do NOT serve or sell over packaged products.

  • NO SINGLE SERVICE FOOD ITEMS – Individually packaged snacks (chips, candy bars, ice cream) that have foil or plastic lined wrappers as well as individually packaged condiments, sugars or creamers are not permitted. Instead use large closable dispensers or squeeze bottles. Bulk containers need to meet health requirements.
  • If you are going to sell San Pellegrino cans: the paper foil on the top has to be removed before handed to the customer.

BOTTLED WATER POLICY

This year we are reducing our use of plastic bottled water in efforts to reduce waste at the festival. Water must be sold in 1 LITRE bottles ONLY.  Any smaller sizes are not permitted to be sold at the festival.

SORTING AND WASTE DISPOSAL

The Green Team will oversee several collection sites around the festival where all waste will be separated – there will be no other garbage cans allowed on site.

Vendors will be supplied with buckets for food waste – which will be collected when full. All waste/recycling/food waste must be clearly labeled (using tape) with Type of waste and Vendor name before collection will occur. Vendors are responsible for properly sorting all of their own waste. Waste will not be collected unless its properly sorted and labeled. We suggest using 3 separate cardboard boxes for the soiled paper, returnables, and recyclables and a clear garbage bag for your Garbage. Unsorted waste will not be accepted and you will be asked to resort any mixed bags of waste. We will only be accepting Clear or Blue Bags at the festival. Black Garbage bags will not be accepted. Failure to do so will result in damage deposits being revoked and not be considered for future events.
